How paycheck taxes work in the US
Federal income tax uses progressive brackets β you pay a lower rate on your first dollars and a higher rate only on income above each threshold. In 2026, rates range from 10% (up to $12,400 single) to 37% (above $640,600).
FICA taxes cover Social Security (6.2% on the first $184,500) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages). High earners pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax above $200K single / $250K MFJ.
State income tax varies widely β nine states levy none at all, while others use progressive brackets or flat rates.
